Sign Of the Times
How many quarters fit in a 35mm film can? I grabbed a bunch of coins from the small wicker basket on the floor of my car filled with loose change from my bureau. The white plastic film can holds about six dollars worth of quarters. Then, with the three one-dollar bills in my wallet, along with the ten from the secret pocket, I went into the supermarket hoping I wouldn't have to use my "emergency fifty", hidden in the even more secret pocket. My credit card is not completely maxed out but I've sworn off using it. One way or the other these groceries would be a cash purchase. Finally at the check out the total is $32.26 so I have to pull out the fifty. Following the change in bills came the coins, falling loudly into the tray. It sounded like a mini version of coins falling from a slot machine.
This visit to the supermarket was a vignette of frequent feelings of these past months about the screwed up economy in our country. I know my life is full and rich, that I'm better off than many people in the world, but this is an undeniable change -- a definite squeeze, and a source of pressure and anxiety that wasn't here a year ago.
